The Refugee Crisis and the Role of Universities – Sapienza University, 18 October

Sapienza University, in collaboration with UNIMED, is organising a conference called “The refugee crisis and the role of universities”, which will be held in Rome on October 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Rectorate of the University.

The event will open with the experiences and the activities of the “inHERE – Higher Education supporting Refugees in Europe” project, financed by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership. It aims to be an occasion to promote the opportunities put forward by European universities to facilitate the integration and the access of refugees to higher education institutions.

In the current refugee crisis that Europe is facing, the social dimension of higher education is committed to offering refugees the possibility to participate in the European Space of Higher Education. The inHERE project therefore aims to strengthen the sharing of knowledge, mutual support and academic partnerships. To this end, the project has realised and published a catalog of good practices on welcoming refugees, which is a selection of the nearly 300 initiatives collected through the Refugees Welcome Map of EUA, the European University Association, and is currently producing a series of webinars promoted by the University of Barcelona on the themes of the project.

This conference will be the opportunity to present the catalog on welcoming refugees into higher education and to discuss the results of the project together with important figures from institutions, international organisations and Italian universities.

Prefect Rosetta Scotto Lavina, from the Central Direction for Politics of Immigration and Asylum, will also present the “National plan for integration”. The UNHCR, represented by Andrea de Bonis, and Cimea, represented by Luca Lantero, will also give speeches, together with representatives from Italian universities who will share their own experiences.
