FAO’s recent publications on food and nutrition security

As the 39th World Food Day approaches, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) wishes to recognize the importance of its partnerships with its Academia and Research Institute (ARI).

UNIMED is aware of the importance that partnerships have in common efforts for developing and disseminating knowledge. For this reason, on 10th June 2019, UNIMED and FAO signed a Memorandum of Understanding which recognises the importance of academic and research institutions in assisting governments to ensure specific policy reforms and aims to provide a framework for cooperation between FAO and UNIMED by joining technical and academic efforts on matters of mutual interest for both parties. In the fight against hunger and malnutrition, FAO understands that ARI are key actors in the development and dissemination of knowledge and further are preparing the next generation of leaders who will be responsible for achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. On World Food Day, FAO takes this opportunity to share its recent publications topics on food and nutrition security.

  • The State of Food and Agriculture, is one of the most important annual publications of our Organization which goal is to disseminate science-based assessments related to key food and agriculture topics. The main theme of the 2019 edition is on food losses and waste. The study provides new estimates of the world’s food post-harvest up to, but excluding, the retail level.

  • The FAO Publications Series 2019 is a catalogue featuring FAO’s most active publications series, both new and long-standing. The catalogue is divided in several sections focusing on topics ranging from reports and statistics to trade and investment, from education and youth to agriculture and natural resources, and many more. Further details inform the public about publications’ links, language versions, QR codes redirecting to online resources.

  • The Resources Partnerships Impact 2019 is an interesting report highlighting key results, achievements and human-centered stories related to FAO’s collaboration with partners such as academia, research centers, member countries, the private sector, institutional partners, civil society and cooperatives. In particular, the publication focuses on how FAO works to defeat hunger at different levels, as well as how the Organization is adapting to respond to food and hunger challenges including by creatively leveraging funds coming from different sources.

  • The “Youth in motion for climate action!” focuses on climate-resilient capacity development, agricultural education, and entrepreneurial guidance to promote decent rural employment in agriculture, and platforms that create alliances and networks for stimulating climate action and exchanging information. The publication gathers successful youth-focused case studies addressing the impacts of climate change which benefited nearly 55 000 young women and young men, created over 12 000 jobs for young people in the agriculture sectors and have indirectly reached nearly a quarter of a million students, farmers and families in both urban and rural areas.

Lastly, FAO has developed the Internship Programme as an opportunity for young people from FAO Member Nations to acquire professional experience. Indeed, Capacity Development is an efficient tool to develop skills to fight hunger and malnutrition.
