Higher Education global reform in Tunisia: UNIMED’s commitment to universities through the SAGESSE project

On the 9, 10 and 11 of January in Tunis, the Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, together with the Mediterranean Universities Unions – UNIMED, organized, as part of the support of the European Union to the global reform of Tunisian Universities, ,the kick-off meeting of the SAGESSE Project “L’amélioration de la gouvernance dans le système d’enseignement supérieur en Tunisie: vers une autonomie des universités et de nouveaux mécanismes d’assurance qualité”. The project is funded by the European Commission under the Erasmus+ Programme under the Key Action “Capacity Building in the field of Higher Education”.

This 3 years-long project, coordinated by UNIMED, aims to modernize Tunisia’s higher education system by strengthening its quality assurance system, governance and funding mechanisms based on the results. By promoting the autonomy of universities in the field of human resources, academia and most of all finance, the project will also contribute to improve the employability of graduates and promote innovation and research.

Mr. Slim Khalbous, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mr Patrice Bergamini, European Union Ambassador to Tunisia, Mr. Marcello Scalisi, Director of UNIMED, Mr. Hmaeid Ben Aziza, Secretary General of UNIMED, as well as the Presidents and vice-presidents of Tunisian universities were present at the opening of the kick-off meeting of the project on the afternoon of January 9.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research as well as representatives of the 13 public Tunisian universities and European partners from Spain, France and Italy, who successively presented the “Work packages” planned in this project. Each coordinator outlined its approach, the composition of the working groups, the tasks to be developed, the organization of the activities, the schedule and the partners as well as the deliverables and expected results.

The meeting ended with a session dedicated to the administrative staff and the project managers on administrative, budgetary and financial matters.
