Within the scope of the MIMIr project “Modernisation of Institutional Management of Innovation and Research in South Neighbouring countries“, a focus group has been held in Milano, hosted by the Universitá degli Studi di Milano (UNIMI) on September 15, 2016, gathering representatives from the University of Barcelona, University of Montpellier, Sapienza University, EUA, and UNIMED.
The programme started with presentations by UNIMI that gave a practical insight into research and innovation management at the university, followed by group discussion, where the European partners had the opportunity to provide, compare, and exchange their own experiences, and practices.
Among other presentations, Prof. Chiara Tonelli, Vice-Rector for Research at UNIMI, described UNIMI research strategy, which is based on 4 main pillars:
1. support capacity to attract competitive funds
2. strengthen the research infrastructure
3. the role of departments and strategic motivation
4. attract of external talents and strengthening of internal excellence
Based on the insights into research and innovation management at the university, project partners discussed key success factors to inform the transition process that are taking place in the system of research, innovation and higher education, such as: widen participation in university networks; establish task forces at grassroots level; build trust among administrative staff and academic staff; select the administrative staff trough competitive selections.
These recommendations will be included in the upcoming “Handbook and Report on European Innovation and Research Management”, which will be delivered in the coming month.
