UNIMED attends the 13th meeting of experts of the GTMO 5+5 |

UNIMED attended the 13th meeting of experts of the GTMO 5+5 (*), hosted by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (currently holding the presidency of the Group), and organized in collaboration with CETMO (Centre for Transport Studies in the Western Mediterranean).
The experts of the 10 countries members of GTMO took part to the meeting, together with the representatives of CETMO and one representative of the European Commission – DG Energy and Transport. UNIMED was invited as observer, with the presence of Prof. Franco Rizzi, Secretary General and Andrea Rausa, coordinator of UNIMED’s sub-network on transport, logistics and multimodality.
The following topics were discussed:
- Update of the work plan of the GTMO 5+5, decisions of the last Ministerial meeting (Rome 2009) and future steps;
- Relations of the GTMO with the Euro Med Transport Forum and the new-born Union for the Mediterranean;
- Presentation of the following research studies (concluded or on-going): “Need for a dedicated European fund for realizing the trans‐Mediterranean transport network”; “The logistic sector in the southern shore of the Mediterranean”; “Study for the application of a new tariff for maritime security”; “Training needs in the transport and logistic sector in the western Mediterranean”
- Organization of a seminar on “Logistics in the Maghreb”, to be held in Tunisia the next September - October 2010;
- Presentation of the Action Plan for Training in the Transport and logistic sector.
Prof. Franco Rizzi had the opportunity to present the network of UNIMED, its activities in the field of Transport and Logistics, with particular emphasis on the research The state of transports in the Euro-Mediterranean Region (presented to the public the last 08th of July, in Rome) and the sub-network on transport, logistic and multimodality, created in 2007. Moreover, he underlined the activities developed in collaboration with CETMO and the EIB (European Investment Bank), in the framework of the LOGISMED project, focussing on developing a network and specific actions to reinforce the training in the field of logistics in the Mediterranean. Saki Aciman, Director of CETMO, proposed UNIMED as a reference and accredited Institution for all the activities of GTMO concerning training and higher education, starting with the up-coming definition of the plan for training in the transport and logistics sector.
(*)The GTMO 5+5 - The Transport Group of the Western Mediterranean - aims to promote cooperation on transport in the Western Mediterranean and to contribute to the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. The members of GTMO are transport ministers from the ten countries in the region (Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia) and the EC Directorate General for Energy and Transport, as observer status. CETMO holds the position of secretariat, providing technical support.
