This year marks the 25th anniversary of the EuroMediterranean Partnership, better known as the Barcelona Process.
Created in 1995 as a result of the Conference of EuroMediterranean Authorities and Ministers of Foreign Affairs held in Barcelona on 27 and 28 November, under the Spanish presidency of the EU, the process led to the Barcelona Declaration.
The aim of the initiative, according to the declaration, was to “[…]establish a comprehensive partnership among the participants of the EuroMediterranean partnership through strengthened political dialogue on a regular basis, the development of economic and financial cooperation and greater emphasis on the social, cultural and human dimension[…]”.
This process later led to the creation of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in 2008.
Striving to highlight the importance of regional dialogue, coordination and solidarity in today’s particular context, the UfM Secretariat has launched a campaign to commemorate the principles and values of the Barcelona Process.
As UNIMED we support and participate in this important commemoration.
As recalled by UNIMED founder, Prof. Franco Rizzi on the occasion of UNIMED 25th anniversary in 2016 “UNIMED is an association that has built bridges and dialogues among the countries of the two shores of the Mediterranean, over the last 25 years” and our mission is, still today starting from 1991- UNIMED foundation year, to carry on these fundamental values.
On the UfM website you will find a collection of success stories of cooperation in this 25 years and more useful information.
