Civic Education For The Digital Age, Zagreb, 17-18 May 2022


On the 17th and 18th of May 2022, the partners of NEXUS – Promoting the Nexus of Migrants through active citizenship met at the Institute for the Development of Education in Zagreb, Croatia.

UNIMED, along with the project’s partners: The National Distance Education University, Spain (UNED), The Knowledge Innovation Center, Malta (KIC), Zavod APIS / APIS Institute, Slovenia, The Institute for the Development of Education, Croatia (IDE), The European Citizen Action Service, Brussels (ECAS) and Malmö University, Sweden (MAU), attended this event that was an opportunity to take stock of the main results obtained so far and to discuss future activities and goals.

Furthermore, the “Community Engagement and Service Learning Guidelines for Higher Education was released on the NEXUS website. The objective of these guidelines is to promote innovative ways in which HEIs can support and work with wider communities by enabling civic engagement within a diverse student group, specifically focusing on Service-Learning (SL).

Under the same framework, the Institute for the Development of Education organized an event on “Civic Education for the Digital Age” on the 17th of May, 2022 . The event was attended by a group of Croatian Students and professors, and was covered by the Croatian National TV. 

The event introduced the NEXUS project to the audience, and was followed by a panel discussion on civic participation, active citizenship, digital tools, Service Learning, and Migration. The event concluded with a world coffee workshop on “Basic skills for active citizenship, Digital tools for active citizenship and Service Learning: a tool for increasing civic participation of young people”.

This event was an opportunity to present again the MOOC designed under the NEXUS project Online Course “Civics 4.0: active citizenship and participation in the digital age” and the platform for exchanging resources on active citizenship and participation in the digital age, which are among the main outputs produced by the project.

About the project:

“Promoting The Nexus Of Migrants Through Active Citizenship” is an Erasmus + project running from 2019 to 2022, that builds upon the literature to focus on empowering students (especially migrants) to exercise their rights, uphold human values, and contribute constructively to the society around them and the global community in general. The project explores the relationship between digitally-enabled participatory tools and democracy. NEXUS aims at innovating the civic educational process resulting in increased participation of students in their communities.
