As climate change is becoming more and more frequently a priority issue, researchers and scientists are always looking for new methods of analysis and the use of new technologies is becoming essential in order to understand and to prevent the effects of the climate and environmental change.
In this context, satellite images make it possible to analyse phenomena such as forest fires, floods or the melting of glaciers, as well as other socio-environmental problems linked to global environmental change. Today, observing the Earth from space is easier than ever. Geographic Information Technologies (also called geo-ICT) allow us to know from anywhere on the planet ‘where’ and ‘why’ some phenomena occur and the remote sensing technology – which is the science that deals with obtaining information about the Earth through the use of drones, satellites or planes – allows us to identify what is happening in a particular place and investigate its impact on the Earth.
In this framework, the Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing Service (SIGTE) of the University of Girona (Spain) has developed and launched Edusat, an interactive platform which allows students, teachers, researchers and general public to identify, control and analyse the transformations in the earth’s surface produced by global environmental change. From different practical cases, users will be able to identify these natural phenomena such as forest fires, glacier melting, deforestation or urban growth while learning to explore and process satellite images to obtain results.
In this frame, the UNIMED SubNetwork on Climate and Environmental Change is pleased to organise in collaboration the University of Girona a webinar focused on the Edusat platform and to presentation of future opportunities offered by EU programmes in the field of climate and environmental change.
The webinar will be held online the next October 28th, 2021 from 10.30am to 12.30pm CEST and it will have the objective to provide information concerning Edusat platform and its practical use and to highlight the opportunities offered by EU programmes in the field of climate and environmental change.
During the webinar there will be the opportunity to attend a workshop aiming to show the potential of satellite imagery and their use through a case study. In addition, the webinar will involve the presentation of Dr. Raniero Chelli, Ambassadors of the European Climate Pact, on the opportunity to develop research, innovation and training projects in the framework of the EU programmes and opened to organisations based outside the European Union.
At the end of the webinar, a special section will be dedicated to questions in order to provide all the details concerning the practical application offered by the Edusat platform.
