On April 28th UNIMED will virtually host the Kick off meeting of IRHAL, For an analysis of the Lebanese protests and the role of the youth beyond the paradigm of confessionalism

IRHAL project (funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International cooperation) intends to analyse the participation of the youth community (and within it specifically students) in the protest movements that took place in Lebanon in 2019, also to analyse the possible influence on the progress of the aforementioned protests.

What was the role of young people and students? What is the possibility of creating a new inter-and supra-confessional leadership? What the economic condition of the young people who pushed them towards such protests? What was and is nowadays the reaction of the ancien regime? Why have other young people chosen to stay and defend the confessional scheme by siding with the government and the various parties? What was the role played by the teachers and some rectors? What is the role of university institutions and therefore in particular of the youth and student component?

The research, developed with the collaboration of three Lebanese universities (Lebanese University, Lebanese International University, USEK – Holy Spirit University of Kaslik) associated with the UNIMED network, and under the scientific supervision of the Italian University of Cagliari, will contribute to defining the frustrations and aspirations of the Lebanese youth by tracing an unprecedented profile with respect to political dynamics of this country, which is central in the action of Italian foreign policy.
