Final event: Unfolding Digital Curation

When: 21st May, 2024

Background

Developing digital strategies has become a key factor, influencing the entire ecosystem around museums. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became evident that dedicated professionals and learning paths were lacking, especially at the higher educational level.

Seven different partners (four Universities, one research centre, one academic network, and one IT private enterprise) from five different EU countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Serbia and Cyprus) have decided to join their forces and create the project “DCBox –Digital Curator Training & Tool Box”. The professional figure of the Digital Curator is investigated: it is an emerging professional figure whose relevance has been recently emphasised by the need to rely on digital, smart and connected cultural offers, especially referring to museums on-site and online visits.However, there is currently no universally accepted reference framework that defines the skills, competences, and expertise a Digital Curator should learn. The results of DCBox testify an unfolding panorama but also call for a continued commitment of universities and museums to develop effective and sustainable solutions to ensure heritage knowledge and dissemination.

The event is organised by the DCBox project in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome and under the patronage of ICOM Italy.

Objectives

  • Exchange knowledge, lessons learned and good practices on how to enhance the professional figure of the digital curator with an innovative, cross-cutting and collaborative approach;
  • Debating on how to better connect academia and cultural institutions on the basis of a digital approach;
  • Enlarging the network of stakeholders potentially interested in the DCbox, persuading them to follow up with the project activities (e.g. through the replication of the implemented training course using the produced intellectual outputs) or to engage with single project partners.

Target Audience

The event is of interest to  academic and research staff, museums professionals, cultural technologies and specialists dealing with digitalization and virtual reality for culture enhancement, students, and anyone interested in exploring the opportunities digitalization can offer for culture enhancement.
