UNIMED’s associated universities selected for the European Universities Initiative: a step further to enhance the link between Higher Education and European values

The European Universities Initiative is “designed to significantly strengthen mobility of students and staff, and foster the quality, inclusiveness and competitiveness of European higher education”

(Rome, 16 July 2019) Funded under the Erasmus+ programme, the European Universities Initiative is the flagship project of the European Education Area. In the framework of this initiative, alliances of European universities will receive fundings over the next three years. As explained by the European Commission, “European Universities are transnational alliances that will become the universities of the future, promoting European values and identity”.

The results of the first round of this Initiative have just been published. This is a first testing period to experiment the concept of European universities itself as well as its potential impact on higher education. Seventeen alliances, composed of several universities each, have been selected by the European Commission. Of those, nine are composed of UNIMED’s associated universities.

This is the case for the alliance CHARM European University (Challenge-driven, Accessible, Research-based, Mobile) (CHARMEU) of which UNIMED is an associated partner, and to which participates its associated universities of Barcelona and Montpellier. During a press conference, the rector of the Universitat de Barcelona pointed out to the most important aspects of such alliance: language plurality, international projects and european experience, goals that meet those of UNIMED, which is itself committed to uphold such values in the different projects it participates to.

Other European universities alliances selected also include UNIMED associated universities such as UNA Europa (1EUROPE), with UNIMED associated Universities of Alma Mater Studiorum Universita di Bologna and Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne; ARQUS European University Alliance (ARQUS)) with UNIMED associated Universidad de Granada and Universita degli Studi di Padova; CIVIS – a European civic university alliance (CIVIS) with UNIMED associated Università degli studi di Roma la Sapienza and Université Aix-Marseille; EDUC European Digital UniverCity with UNIMED associated Universita degli studi di Cagliari; European Partnership for an Innovative Campus Unifying Regions (EPICUR) with UNIMED associated Université de Strasbourg; Fostering Outreach within European Regions, Transnational Higher Education and Mobility (FORTHEM) with UNIMED associated Università degli studi di Palermo; University Network for Innovation, Technology and Engineering (UNITE!) with UNIMED associated Politecnico di Torino; Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) with UNIMED associated University of Cyprus.

As European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Mr Tibor Navracsics, said, the hope is that this initiative will be both a “key building block of the European Education Area” and a “real game changer for higher education in Europe, boosting excellence and inclusion”.

The full list of European Universities alliances selected in the first round is accessible here. A second call will be launched this autumn.
