June 20 – World Refugee Day 2020: UNIMED Pledge

UNIMED celebrates the World Refugee Day 2020 by reiterating its commitment to the inclusion of Refugees, Asylum Seekers, Internally Displaced Persons, Stateless Persons and Returnees into education. We encourage our members and readers to explore promising practices, needs and gaps in expanding access to higher education for refugees, and to take a step with refugees education and do not forget the daily struggle of the hosting communities.

This year, the COVID-19 has exacerbated the crisis around this very sensitive matter. In the MENA Region, the pandemic crisis arrived in an already patchy and in-crisis scenario. In the last years, the Syrian crisis and the migration process from Africa highly affected region’s equilibrium.  The recent instability in Lebanon, the worldwide economic crisis, the new political balances in the MENA region: all events that are producing evolving conditions, sometimes regressing conditions, forcing Higher Education System practitioners to constantly and continuously re-adapt and re-shuffle strategies.

We will talk of this on June 22, 2020 (3.00 pm – 5.30 pm CET) in the webinar “The changing nature of crisis in the MENA region: which role for Research and Academic cooperation in a post COVID-19 scenario” UNIMED has organised in the framework of the 5th Edition of the UNIMED Week in Brussels Online. Here you will find more information and the agenda.
