The Sustainable Tourism Community’s horizontal project, in which UNIMED is partner, has been renewed until 2022.
After three years of project, renewed until 2022 as a second generation of the capitalization strategy of the Interreg Med, the Sustainable Tourism Community will dedicate this new mandate to promote the transferring of results and policies developed by its modular projects through mainstreaming and strategic liaising series of activities at transnational level.
The tourism sector is amongst the highest income generators in the Mediterranean. Leisure related activities make tourism a leading economic sector in terms of gross value added and employment. Tourism contributes directly to regional economies with sectoral synergies and strong multiplying effects. It is becoming an increasingly fundamental factor for local development and an expanding dimension of research and cooperation of EU and international programming. With its new partnership composed of Diputació de Barcelona (Spain) as lead partner, Latin Arc (Spain), UNIMED-Mediterranean Universities Union (Italy), University of Thessaly (Greece), NECSTouR – Network of European Regions for a Sustainable and Competitive Tourism (Belgium), Adriatic Ionian Euroregion (Croatia), RDA Green Karst – Regional Development Agency Green Karst Ltd. (Slovenia) the Sustainable Tourism Community will further develop its specialization on Sustainable Tourism and networking in the Mediterranean.
UNIMED’s interest on the topic of the Tourism, in particular, in the Mediterranean Region has led to the launch of the SubNetwork on Mediterranean Tourism. Having the purpose of gathering information and connecting the main actors involved in the topic, the SubNetwork wants to promote synergies, knowledge exchange and partnerships among the involved Universities, support policy dialogue and strengthen consultation in the Mediterranean, being one of the world tourism hot spots. The participation is reserved to UNIMED Universities members.
