On April 26, UNIMED participated in the Euro-Med Innovation Day organized by Berytech with the financial support of the European Union (5TOI project) and in collaboration with Beirut Digital District .
Organizers “brought together Euro-Mediterranean and Lebanese innovators, researchers, policy makers, international companies, investors and industrialists from the region for four days to facilitate international cooperation for the development of innovative solutions in the areas of water, energy and food”. As written by international and local press, the event “proposed a radically new way to generate and encourage innovation and research in the fields of water, energy and food in the region using the NEXUS approach” which is the core of the 5TOI project.
The main objectives of the Euro-MED, as summarized on the international portal SEMIDE, were the following:
- Encourage innovation and research in the fields of energy, food and water in the Southern Mediterranean countries by supporting and connecting stakeholders, researchers and partners from the region and facilitate international cooperation for the development of innovative solutions in those sectors.
- Offer a wide range of opportunities as well as bring together ideas, knowledge and people from the energy, water and food sectors, addressing future trends, policies, business and funding opportunities in the region.
- It will include interactive panels with international and local experts in food, water and energy sectors, in addition to expert matchmaking activities to create collaboration opportunities.
According to one of the Berytech representatives, Ramy Boujawdeh: “Food, water and energy in the Middle East and North Africa are scarce and need to be tackled at marco-government policy level through mobilizing the innovation ecosystem to improve access to these resources & mobilizing their use in order to optimize economic development”. And this is exactly the way in which 5TOI project is operating: bringing together experts in order to find suitable, reliable and sustainable solution for these problems by using the nexus approach.
