Register for the Webinar: Well-being of PhDs and Professionals in Doctoral Education // 29 November

(Rome, 20 November 2019) What can universities do to create a supportive environment for doctoral candidates? This is the question on which the PRIDE webinar will focus. It will take place on 29 November 2019, at 11:00 CET.

The webinar, organized by PRIDE, Association for Professionals in Doctoral Education, will address this issue in three different ways: 

  • The advices and answers that professionals in doctoral education can provide, when faced with PhDs in difficult life situations. The webinar aims at answering the question of how they can counsel the doctoral students despite their absence of training in psychology or psychotherapy. 
  • The concepts and tools professionals in doctoral education can use to protect themselves from the burden stemming from these counselling situations. These situations are indeed not only hard for the PhD students but can also represent a burden for the counselling professionals themselves.
  • The framework and the good practices that universities can implement to improve the well-being of PhDs.

This webinar will feature the contribution of Dr Jane Creaton, Reader in Higher Education at the University of Portsmouth. She is currently leading a project to promote the mental health and wellbeing of postgraduate researchers and, as the institutional Postgraduate Research Wellbeing Champion, she implements and monitors the strategy for promoting PGR wellbeing. She teaches on institution-wide development programmes for postgraduate research students and their supervisors and is currently supervising five doctoral students. She co-organised the First International Conference on Postgraduate Mental Health and Wellbeing in Brighton in May 2019 and is currently editing a special issue of Studies in Graduate and Postdoctoral Education focussing on mental health and wellbeing for Spring 2021.
