2022 marks the 20th Anniversary of FAO’s Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems Programme (GIAHS).

The Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) are agroecosystems inhabited by communities that live in an intricate relationship with their territory. These evolving sites are resilient systems characterized by remarkable agrobiodiversity, traditional knowledge, invaluable cultures and landscapes, sustainably managed by farmers, herders, fisherfolk, and forest people in ways that contribute to their livelihoods and food security.

The GIAHS Initiative was launched by FAO in 2002 during the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. To date, 67 sites in 22 countries are designated as GIAHS, and many others are looking forward to being designated in the future.

To celebrate the achievements of GIAHS over the past 20 years, FAO is delighted to invite you to the ceremony that will take place in virtual format on Thursday, 27 October 2022 from 10:00 to 16:30 (CET).

On this occasion, high-level government officials of FAO Members will share the results and experiences from their GIAHS sites across five different regions. This will be followed by presentations by experts, elaborating further on key results and lessons learned from actions implemented in the sites’ agricultural systems.
