Title

The changing nature of crisis in the MENA region: which role for Research and Academic cooperation in a post COVID-19 scenario

Date

22 June 2020, at 3.00 pm – 5.30 pm CET

Abstract

International, regional and local crisis are highly affecting the MENA region by putting pression on local societies and highlighting tensions. The pandemic crisis arrived in an already patchy and in-crisis scenario. In the last years, the Syrian crisis and the migration process from Africa highly affected region equilibrium and aspect.  The recent instability in Lebanon, the worldwide economic crisis, the new political balances in the MENA region: all events that are producing evolving conditions, sometimes regressing conditions, forcing Higher Education System practitioners (as we are) to constantly and continuously re-adapt and re-shuffle strategies.  According to UNIMED, is then necessary and mandatory to observe and analyze the changing nature of these crisis in order to design fluid actions able to adapt to constantly and rapidly changing scenarios.

For all these reasons there is always the need to know more on these HE realities and hear voices directly from the MENA region and from international institution, in order to put, around the same table, people with different perspectives that are, together, able to deeply understand the changing nature of this crisis situation and act accordingly. Universities, in this sense, play a crucial role by acting as social, political and institutional actor for the benefit of the whole society.
