In the framework of the partnership with the FAO – Food and Agriculture Organization, UNIMED coordinated a case study research on policies, strategies, initiatives and programs related to family farming and a mapping of the existing institutional framework related to family farming in 5 countries in the region of Europe: Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, and Portugal.
The research teams, selected by UNIMED, consisted of 5 universities:

UNIMED was flanked by Maria Angela Perito, Professor at the University of Teramo and responsible for the academic coordination of the team and the consolidation of research results.
The project has been running from December 2021 to October 2022.
The United Nations Decade for Family Farming (“UNDFF”) 2019-2028 has emphasized the need to innovate, formulate and reform policy and legal frameworks, and develop well-targeted interventions to support the multidimensionality of family farming. In this context, UNIMED is involved in the promotion of UNDFF by carrying out awareness raising activities and strengthening the exchange of information within its network to support family farming.
The research results and case studies on family farming in Europe strengthened the exchange of knowledge and good practices on family farming initiatives and the institutional context among FAO program countries in these countries and presented good examples on the above-mentioned context.
This project attempted to achieve the following specific objectives:
- Context analysis, mapping of the existing set of institutional, policy and legal frameworks targeting or related to family farming in the European region.
- Documentation and systematic analysis of cases studies about policies, strategies, initiatives and programs successfully supporting family farming with regard to the region of Europe.
